Born July 9, 1964, in San Francisco, California, Courtney Michelle Harrison is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and artist. Known most for her relationship with Kurt Cobain, her wild stage presence and confrontation lyrics, and her sometimes bizarre public antics, Love made a name for herself in the '90s with film roles like Sid and Nancy, Straight to Hell, and The People vs. Larry Flynt, and with her alternative rock band, Hole. The band's second album, Live Through This, went platinum. In the 2000s, she continued to take on occasional acting roles and released another album with Hole. She popularized the style of wearing babydoll dresses and smeared makeup, later dubbed kinderwhore. Love began dating Cobain in 1991 and were married in 1992. They have one daughter, Frances. In 1994, Cobain committed suicide, causing a backlash for some of his fans, who have compared Love to Yoko Ono and have even gone so far as to claim that she caused his death. Love is a dedicated activist, particularly for victims of sexual abuse and LGBT charities.
Courteney Love's real last name, "Harrison," is an English/Irish name meaning "son of Henry" and found in Lancashire since the 11th Century. Other spellings include "Harryson" and "Harieson." The first Harrison to settle in the United States was Harmon Harrison in Virginia in 1607.
